Hiya! After hearing lots of great stuff about Xenogears, I decided to try it out. So far, the opening has been great! Very interesting. However, I was just asked to go up the mountain path to borrow a camera, and on the way I ran into some enemies. I managed to take them out, but HOLY MOLY, I didn't understand anything. O______O So, could someone explain the basics of combat to me? I just used the "Attack" command and then chose one of the options, but it seemed like the game let me do some kind of Kung-Fu combo? Thanks in advance!

The attack combos are made up of three different normal attacks -- weak ( ^), medium ([]), strong (X) -- and draw from your AP (lower left). Weak is 1AP and has a high success rate for hits. Medium is 2AP and has a lower hit rate. Strong is 3AP and has the lowest hit rate (not bad; maybe 80% or better). With the AP you have, you can string together whatever combo you like. As you progress, you'll earn more AP. Over time your characters will learn deathblows, which are powerful special moves with specific button combinations. The way a character learns a deathblow is by using the buttons associated with its combo: if a deathblow is []X, you'll learn it by using [] attacks and X attacks. However, be aware that using deathblows doesn't contribute to learning any new ones, so you'll need to continue mixing it up with normal attacks to learn more deathblows! When you get to gear combat, the normal attacks consume fuel instead of AP, and you only get one normal attack per turn. Gear-based deathblows become available based upon the ones you've learned on foot, and that's very important! One of the first dungeons has a boss that will stop your progress dead if you don't purchase the best equipment for your gears (from a vendor in the dungeon) and don't have any gear deathblows to take him down. FYI, later in the game you'll collect gear equipment that enables more gear-based deathblows.

I'm very much looking forward to experiencing this game since so many people think the story and twists are great. ^^

The story is really something else. Feel free to ask if you have any more questions.

The story is really something else. Feel free to ask if you have any more questions. That's super nice of you! I'm so hyped for this game now. Too bad I have exams soon and need to cut down on my play time. >.< I might make a topic with my thoughts on the game as I progress if someone is interested in reading that. Nothing fancy, just a collection of my thoughts on the mysteries the game introduces.
