It's no secret that a lot of people decided to get a WiiU just for X, or at least waited to get one until this game came out. Well I've had a WiiU for quite awhile, and I know X, while probably the killer app, isn't the only title worth having!
So this topic is for WiiU veterans here to suggest other games worth having for the console (Indies and VC as well) to those who have just acquired a WiiU, or really anyone looking to find the next great game on it (besides X of course!)
So yeah, no need to take up an entire message with one suggestion, but do provide a little info about why you recommend the game. Can't leave these poor souls to look up everything themselves!

I've only bought Smash U and 3D World so far, aside from Xenoblade X not sure of the next games I should go for. Would've been Hyrule Warriors before Legends.
Still hopin' Wii U VC in NA gets the original Xenoblade Chronicles.

Splatoon is definitely a very good pickup. It's a rather refreshing take a genre that's been stale for a long, long time. It's vibrant, colorful, and full of some amazingly catchy tunes. The wide array of weapons and such are amazing, and the 4v4 action really is just a heck of a lot of fun (even if occasionally frustrating when you get a bad team--luckily each round only lasts 3-5 minutes depending on mode, so you're never stuck with them for long).
If you like the action of shooters, but are just plain tired of gritty soldiers fighting gritty enemies over gritty brown terrain, definitely give it a shot.

My favorite games on the Wii U are as follows (in no particular order):
Super Mario 3D World - Gorgeous graphics. Creative level design. Awesome jazz band soundtrack. Favorite song:
Pikmin 3 - Most beautiful graphics I've seen on the Wii U (other than Xenoblade X). Fun strategy. Great multiplayer options. Amazing bosses, especially the final boss. Favorite song (spoilers):
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze - Best soundtrack on the Wii U (other than Xenoblade X, of course). David Wise is a genius in this soundtrack. Great level design. Favorite song:
Mario Kart 8 - So much fun to play either online or with friends. Anti-gravity track design. Really great soundtrack. 48 courses, including DLC. Favorite songs (couldn't decide between the two): 1. (dat sax tho) 2. (best Rainbow Road theme, imo)
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD - Great remake. Stunning graphics. Best usage of the GamePad with map and menus on it. Favorite song:
Super Smash Bros. for Wii U - Best Smash game to date. 8-player battles. Great online. Great music. Shulk. Favorite song:
Super Mario Maker - Great creation tool. So much fun to make stages. But you can just play other people's stages as well. Some brilliant courses on there. Your imagination is the limit of this game. Favorite song:
Two games that I haven't played, but would recommend: Splatoon and The Wonderful 101. Favorite Splatoon song: Favorite The Wonderful 101 song (this whole soundtrack is glorious):

I fully second 3D World, Tropical Freeze, Smash Bros., and Wonderful 101.
Hyrule Warriors is really awesome, but pretty grindy (you unlock most alternate weapons and a few characters in Adventure Mode, which takes FOR EVAR).
Mario Kart 8 was good, but just didn't catch my attention. Then again, I haven't played since a long time before 200cc (backlog, y'know?). And I hear 200cc breathes new life.
One game that hasn't been mentioned yet is Rayman Legends, which I loved. Platformers are probably my most played genre, and between 3D World, Tropical Freeze, Rayman Legends, and Super Mario Maker, you are so covered.

200cc turns MK8 into more of a "real" racing game. It's quite speedy and gives the brake button a genuine purpose, which is a first for a Mario Kart game.
On the subject of racing games, Fast Racing NEO will arrive next Thursday, giving the Wii U a much-needed hardcore racing experience and delivering something approximating the HD F-ZERO game that fans have been waiting for.

Splatoon- I'd definitely recommend this. I'm not even a big shooter fan, and yet I love this game. It's probably among my Top 5 favorite games that came out in 2015.
Smash Bros- It's Smash Bros. Need I say more?
Mario Kart 8- This is a pretty fun racing game, and it's my favorite Mario Kart game.
Bayonetta 2- If you like hack'n'slash games like Metal Gear Rising, God of War, Devil May Cry, etc., you might like this game. Plus it comes with both Bayonetta 1 and Bayonetta 2 bundled, so you get 2 full games for the price of one! Might wanna look it up a bit before deciding to buy it though, because it is rated M and can be a little... Odd. The soundtrack's good though.
The Wonderful 101- Another game made by PlatinumGames (Bayonetta's dev), and it's kinda underrated. I'd definitely give it a shot or at least look into it.
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD: Pretty good game, and it's very colorful and has my favorite version of Link (both in the Zelda series and Smash Bros, oddly enough).
Fire Emblem: Sacred Stones (VC): This is my favorite FE game and the 1st I played. If you don't like some of FE:A's elements and want a little more classical FE game, or want to try the series out I'd recommend giving this a shot. You could also do the original Fire Emblem or Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon, but I'd recommend SS beyond all the other Fire Emblems. Also has several of my favorite FE characters in it.
Mega-Man Battle Network (VC): Good RPG, I'd recommend looking into it at least. The battle system is unique and plays pretty good.
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga (VC): A good starting game for getting into the M&L series, especially since it introduces the overall style of the game (and the amazingness that is Fawful).
Donkey Kong 64 (VC): It's a good enough Collectathon 3D Platformer if you like those games. I honestly prefer Banjo-Kazooie (which means I'm hyped for Yooka-Laylee, but that's a different story), but you practically need an Xbox 360 or X1 for that nowadays and I doubt too many people here have those.
Shovel Knight: Haven't played yet, but if you like classic Mega-Man games you might like this game. It's also got the physical copy now so you don't have to download it.
Freedom Planet: Played the demo, but not the full version, but if you like classic Sonic games you might like this game.
That's all I've got, but Fast Racing Neo comes out next week as Wolfe said, and Y-L, Star Fox Zero, SMTXFE, Zelda U (hopefully), Twilight Princess HD, and Pokken coming next year so that'll be nice.

GET SACRED STONES
OMG. So good!
And if you like Fire Emblem's grid-based gameplay, get Advance Wars 1 and 2.

I see a Fire Emblem game listed, although I thought I heard about one coming out soon, did that happen, or will there be two Fire Emblems on Wii U? At any rate, other than Xenoblade and Fire Emblem, are there any other RPGs? Please say what type of game it is, or compare it to another game that I'm likely to have played. Obviously that's hard, since despite us being such close friends, you know nothing about me still, but y'know. Don't compare it to some indie steam game. For the record, I wouldn't count any of the Zelda games I've played as an RPG, which are uh, Zelda, Zelda 2, Gameboy Zelda a little bit, and Link to the Past a ton. Feel free to list games like Zelda, and including Zelda, or hybrid games, or what have you. Not much interest in a FPS/RPG hybrid (do they even make those for Wii?) Also interested in any notable RPGs on regular Wii that I missed. I have Xenoblade, Last Story, some very "Tales of" feeling game called something Rhapsody or something, or L'arc something. And that Atlus game where everything resets after 7 days or whatever, Baroque? I know I missed Pandora's Tower, what's it like? ...And if you like Fire Emblem's grid-based gameplay, get Advance Wars 1 and 2. Are Advance Wars 1 & 2 on the Nintendo store or something, or did they re-release them/remake them/make entirely new games and mis-name them 1 and 2 instead of 3 and 4? I loved Advance Wars on GBA, and it was the only fair game I could play with my friends, playing against me in Tactics Ogre was no fun for them, even if I handicapped myself

Fire Emblem: Sacred Stones is GBA VC. It's predecessor, Fire Emblem is also GBA VC. Shadow Dragon, the remake of the 1st game of the series (the game Marth's in) is also DS VC on eShop. The games coming out next year are the two/three versions of Fire Emblem Fates (3DS) and Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem. With SMTXFE though, I'd really only recommend it if you've played SMT games or Persona 3/4. Especially the Persona duo, looking at SMTXFE gives me a lot of Persona 3/4 vibes. The gameplay isn't as much FE as Persona/SMT, and the tone of the game is more Persona-esque I think.
As I recommended, Mega Man Battle Network is a pretty good RPG. It's somewhat turn-based but puts in some real time elements to make itself a more unique RPG. Plus all the Battle Network games except for BN6 are on eShop now, so if you like BN1 you can continue on.
Other than that, the only other option that I can come up with for an RPG are the Mario & Luigi games. The eShop currently has both SuperStar Saga and Partners In Time. I'd bet Bowser's Inside Story (which is imo the best of the four games) will be released to VC soon too, since it and PT are both DS games. I guess there's other RPGs like Golden Sun, but I'm not sure how much I'd recommend those as I've yet to really play them.

New Golden Sun, or the two from GBA? I found it odd they were so popular, since Beyond the Beyond was like the most panned and hated game of the PS1, one of the first to come out, and it held that "Worst game" title for the entire system life! Unrelated note, the Golden Sun games are at least ok from what I recall, pretty generic. There may have been something slightly innovative with the Psi(magic) system, but I don't recall, it could also just be generic level and learn new spells, pick spell from list, etc. So, any thoughts on Pandora's Tower? The Paper Mario/Mario & Luigi series are kind of...spiritual successors to Super Mario RPG? Minus the involvement of Squaresoft? Are they hybrid-y or straight RPGs? (Or, the platformer/RPG mix that SMRPG was?). Do the Advance Wars games, and other antique games gained from the e-store, allow multiplayer? Either offline side-by-side, or online multiplayer matching? Advance Wars did support the link cable, when it was out...I wouldn't expect them to add multiplayer into like...Fire Emblem, but the games that did support link cable/some other form of multiplayer, should be able to support online matching, riiiite? P.S. Sorry for some of these questions that I could figure out within 10 seconds of plugging in my Wii U, but since I didn't have time to play it anyways, I decided to save both the Wii U and Xenoblade Chronicles X for Xmas, I haven't opened either yet, so I can't check these things out!

I am SO interested in FRN. So what do you think of it, if you've got it? I think it might beat the original F-ZERO for my favorite set of anti-gravity racing physics. Once I figured out that there's an "inertia" involved with turn-in, and that setting up your trajectory is as simple as steering before the corner and using the lean buttons to adjust your line, everything fell into place and it makes for a very satisfying drive. If only there were more tracks with a nice flow of corners like Sunahara Plains...I enjoy them all, but in online multiplayer, it's not as fun when some of the tracks are all about boost orbs and pads, without much regard to cornering skill or choice of craft.

The 1st Golden Sun is the only one on eShop. With Pandora's Tower, I'm not sure as I've not gave it much attention. Mario & Luigi is kinda.... Well, it's Turn-based with some platforming in it, but I think it's different enough from SMRPG. Paper Mario 64 & Thousand Year Door are both turn-based RPGs with less platforming though. In terms of the eShop VC games, they don't have online multiplayer. Local multiplayer maaaybe, depending on the game.

Gonna wait to get it until after the January patch is released. Glad you're enjoying it! It's really not bad right now -- I've only had one evening where my Wii U froze (twice) and I encountered apparent cheaters online -- but it does glitch out with mild regularity, usually just enough to cancel a race before it begins or get stuck on the results screen (you can quit out and keep the points you earned). The rest of the game is so polished that I kinda wonder how that stuff slipped through.
