I figured it would be cool to share our thoughts on the story up to a certain point somewhere. I love to read what people think.
Keep in mind, no spoilers for anything other than chapter 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9.
Anyway, to kick things off; Here are the main mysteries so far in my opinion:
1. Why did the alien races battle two years ago? 2. Who was the mysterious defender of the White Whale? 3. Why are the Ganglion so passionate about killing humans? 4. Who is Goetia and what is her motivation? Answer: A Ganglion who is intent on exterminating all humans. 5. Why does the number on the BLADE tower decrease? Answer: To signify the amount of mim fuel left. 6. How are the humans able to understand the languages? 7. What is the Great One that Luxaar is talking about? 8. What is the giant black Mech that we found? Answer: The vessel of The Great One called the Vita. 9. What was that thing than Vandham wanted to bring up about Elma in the hangar? 10. Why did the huge flying monster save us from the Tainted? 11. What's up with Lao? Answer: He apparently helped the Ganglion retrieve the Vita for reasons unknown. 12. Why are the Ganglion afraid of our real bodies?

Welp, called it. Didn't expect it to happen so early though. Anyway that boss battle was awesome, it was nice to finally have an even match for my team as opposed to being way overpowered or completely unable to win.
The first time I fought them I didn't expect them to be so strong and got slaughtered. I went back to the battlefield in a skell thinking I was so clever only to discover that skells are unavailable. Guess it's only fair. Third time's the charm! I upgraded all my gear, upgraded my characters' arts and skills and swapped them around to focus on killing humanoids and multi-target attacks, aaand still lost. The game wanted to lower the difficulty but I refused. I went back again, this time making sure to use my party commands to have them focus on the weaker enemies first. I also upgraded and made sure to spam trash talk as much as possible to keep the aggro on me, because I was level 38 and my allies were level 24-26. I was finally able to secure victory in a hard fought battle... then he gets in a mech for another fight! Thankfully my Skell was very strong and I had one of my allies in my old lvl 20 piece of junk. The non-mech allies didn't last too long, but thankfully the skells were strong enough to take him and his lackeys down after another hard-fought battle with the help of Overdrive.
Definitely the best fight in the game thus far.

Agreed that the boss battle was the best fight in the game so far. We did learn a couple of things in this chapter too... The ganglion are AFRAID of the humans. This got me thinking... Maybe the human body is poisonous to them? Or maybe... something more ominous.

I also just came here to share the great fight I had with that boss battle. I was L41, while Elma was ~L38 and Lin was something like ~L32. I scouted my wife's (L21) character for the mission, but I ran into some speedbumps along the way and my 30 minutes expired, so I scouted a bystander at the nearest FN site...I'm glad I did. Maybe it was Elma and Lin's armor, the spike damage, or not giving party orders early enough, but Lin went down in the first couple minutes and Elma didn't last long after that. Together with the random L39 scout, I cleared out the soldiers and had maybe half of the girl's HP bar depleted (forgot her name). Then the scout went down, and for whatever reason it seemed like I couldn't generate enough TP to revive anyone. I kept fighting, relying on a skill to heal myself with arts whenever an aura is active. I dropped below 1000HP more than once, which was tense whenever they stunned me, but I kept pumping auras and gained the upper hand once I finished the female wrothian. Finally, it was one-on-one with Ga Jiarg, an appropriately honorable duel. It was pretty smooth from there, but I was so pleased with pulling off that narrow victory.

Man, that was tough.
I didn't know it was a two-part battle, so when I handily beat them on-foot, I was a bit disappointed...
...Then I proceeded to lose at the mech part three times.
I actually nearly put the game down for the night after the third attempt, as I was able to fight through the mob and get Ga-Jiarg down to not even a SLIVER of health before he destroyed my Skell and proceeded to lock my avatar into place, blasting away my health in its entirety before I could use one final art.
Ended up trying again only for all of my party members to die without putting up a fight, and it happened even quicker when I tried once more (Irina refused to use the arts I needed her to), so at that point, I decided I'd try one more time with a plan less reliant on my party members.
Before starting the battle again, I fought a couple enemies so my TP would be built up and ready for when I fought the mob on foot (Afterburner was my most efficient option since the mechs tended to group themselves together). All my other party members still died before the end of the fight, and I thought I might've screwed myself over when I accidentally activated overdrive early, but thankfully, I managed to pull through in spite of those things.
tl;dr I no longer feel invincible, & Afterburner is still the MVP...and G-Buster.
But yeah, I wasn't expecting this chapter to be centered around the Wrothians, nor was I expecting their "turn" to happen so quickly. I also expected more to happen with the whole Lao deal as opposed to nothing really changing other than him being in a tube now, but I guess all will be explained soon enough.

tl;dr I no longer feel invincible, & Afterburner is still the MVP...and G-Buster. Did your party members have skells? The way you worded your post implies they didn't. And I'm partial to the sweet M-Sniper, including how you can sit back and pluck off squad tasks for sub-L35 enemies. It's also just 50 fuel per shot, so if I blast appendages while OHKing things, I can top off my tank in no time.

Unless the one you scouted time runs out before the fight even starts and you have to go with 3 people Thanks for nothing Wolfe

This is somewhat due to laziness on my part but mostly due to the fact that, up until then, I'd been having no trouble with story enemies. As for other Skell weapons, well, I honestly haven't really used enough to have a favorite yet. I'll keep that one in mind, though.

Definitely the best boss fight in the game thus far. It didn't give me any trouble at all, due to me being level 57. I didn't use my skells at all, except for at the beginning of the second phase so I could get a better look at the Vasara's incredible design. Then I switched back to on-foot and won pretty easily (I didn't use Overdrive either). I prolonged the battle as much as I could to be able to hear NO.EX01 as much as I could again.
The Wrothians are a really neat species, especially Ga Jiarg. I love the honor and pride that they have, enough to turn their backs on Luxaar, which was very satisfying to watch in itself. And it was interesting to find out that the Ganglion are afraid of our real bodies. I wonder what they're afraid of? I suppose I won't find out until we eventually find the Lifehold Core.
The issue of Lao came up again in this chapter. I figure that we'll finally get to confront him in chapter 10, since the game has straight-up told us that he's a traitor. That makes me really excited to keep going with the story.
Overall, it was an excellent chapter. I think I liked the actually story of chapter 8 better than this one, but the boss fight made me like chapter 9 more overall.
But, as always, it'll probably be another 30-ish hours before I do the next chapter. Especially now that I have the flight module coming up! This is the moment that I've been waiting for more than anything else since I first heard about this game. Hopefully it will live up to its hype!

After you get the flight module, make sure you start New in New LA. It's a fantastic affinity mission. The Wrothians actually open up some of my favorite normal missions in the game, and those missions deal directly with Wrothian characters, culture and how they interact with humans. It's easily the best part of the late/post game, story-wise. My favorite NPCs were all pretty much Wrothian NPCs. Also, the final affinity mission I completed in the game was one particular one called "Lion-hearted." After doing so, I felt incredibly satisfied with that as the "epilogue/ending" of the game, even though it was after the story missions were done with and there were quite a few more normal missions to do. The way Lion-hearted ends really feels like a good, final note for Xenoblade Chronicles X. So I would recommend saving it for last. (It is one of the affinity missions that actually requires the ending of the main story to complete, so it's not like you'll be delaying much by saving it for last.) That is, of course, assuming there's a direct sequel.
