Yep, getting X for Christmas in two days, but I saw this in Gamestop when I went in there to browse for amiibos and used game deals today, and I couldn't pass it up.
Played for about 4 hours tonight and really loving (feeling) it. May just use this topic to post periodic thoughts.
But for now I'll just ask: is there anything I need to watch for, or would benefit from knowing ahead of time, and is there anything not explained well in-game that would be better explained here?

Congrats on finding a good deal!
The game does have a lot of features that aren't explained in detail, but nothing that will hinder your progress. The one thing I think you wanna know from the start is how ARTs work, but if you watched the survival guide videos on youtube you already know about Secondary cooldown, positioning, topple, sould voices and such.
The best advice I can give is: Don't attempt to learn everything! Go at your own pace and learn as you go. I'm at the end of the game and there are still features I haven't tried.
EDIT: OHH, I thought you were talking about XCX, not XBC Didn't notice what board this topic was on either. Sorry! XD

Learn gem crafting. That's probably the most complex system in the game, but gems are pretty much the most important thing to be able to beat those higher level enemies. Also, take quests whenever you see them. By doing that, you'll probably be able to level up enough to progress in the story without having to grind.

About what level is that limit? Took on that Verdant something Unique Monster (Lv. 5) at Level 8 with Shulk and Fiora and it was a close call, so that at least gives me a rough idea of how strong those are.

Also ran around mapping out Colony 9 for the fun of it and got to Lv. 12 before I got to the part where Shulk goes to the mines with Reyn.

I wouldn't take on every enemy you find. Just unique monsters or enemies that have items you need. But mapping out areas and taking quests is fine. It's still a really enjoyable experience even if you are overleveled.

Yeah, part of the reason I like getting into fights, besides the item drops, is because I really like the voices and banter, even if the fight lasts for 3 seconds. Guilty pleasure? But yes, I'm definitely loving it despite being overleveled. Can you explain aggro in a bit more detail than the game gives?

That's represented by a red ring around the character. There are arts that draw aggro for a tank to use (such as Reyn). The reason you shouldn't just spam arts as they cool down is because of aggro. If you use too many arts, you'll draw the aggro. Some arts draw more aggro than others. Especially healing arts and other ether-based arts. Shulk has an art that reduces aggro called Shadow Eye. You usually don't want the aggro on Shulk due to his low defense. It's a pretty basic concept, but it's really important to do well.

Like if there are increasing levels of aggro or something. I asked because at one point I used 4 of Fiora's Arts in succession, which obviously drew a lot of aggro, but it also seemed like it caused the enemy to attack her more times in succession than it already (she already had the aggro ring before I used any of those Arts, so I didn't expect the increased aggro to change anything). Might've just appeared that way though. Love the fact that characters not in your party get autoleveled when they rejoin. But it was pretty crazy, at Level 12, Reyn rejoined with a total of 8 Arts. Is he supposed to learn so many so fast? Is Ether basically akin to Magic (in contrast to Physical)?

The reason Shulk doesn't learn nearly as many is because he also has the Monado Arts, which is pretty much another arts palette. And Ether is pretty much Magic.

Nice! I had a similar experience in October, late to the party but it was great to play this before XCX. Like Max Galactica said, I think gem crafting is probably the one thing the game does the worst job of explaining. Basically, you want to avoid crafting a gem unless you can push it into "heat" (200%) or "mega heat" (300%) status, or at least give it a percentage closer to 200% to make it stronger. "Heat" gives you a gem that's one rank higher than the materials you used, and "mega heat" gives you a second up-ranked gem for free. The idea is to combine materials until you get close to 100% without going over, then add the strongest ones to blow way over 100%. So it's vaguely like blackjack, if the goal of blackjack was to try for 21, then combine your cards with another set of cards for the highest possible score. Also, you'll eventually find this list of unneeded drops on GameFAQs useful.

Thanks for the tip on Gem Crafting. Blackjack is an interesting comparison. Thanks a ton for that GFaqs link! I think a topic like that should have a sticky. The box for XCX looks so amazing. But I don't know if I can tear myself away from XC now! Oh, and that title screen music for XC. It blows me away. I just like to sit there and listen to it every time I start up the game. Ok. I wasn't sure if there was more to it than that. Like if there are increasing levels of aggro or something. What's the use of the Lure command? I noticed that when targeting but not engaging an enemy, but couldn't figure out how to use it.

You would want to use it if you want to draw one enemy out of a mob of enemies, or if that enemy is too close to the water, which is not the best place to be fighting.

Does it work on Unique Monsters? Also, is there any reason why CPU party members sometimes run off during battle to attack an enemy way far away from them even when the current foe isn't defeated yet? I had no problem figuring out the command to bring them back, but I don't get why they did it.

Maybe try to tell them to focus their attacks to prevent that? As long as you know how battle commands work, you shouldn't have an issue with that. But I honestly have no idea why they would do that.

Yeah, I was going up Tephra Hill and Shulk just up and ran off to take on some Bunnits on his own.
Do items in shops stay there forever, or do they get replaced with newer items. I really want to buy everything at endgame just to see what they look like on the party members (and then reload the save so I'm not wasting money on stuff I don't need), but I don't want things to disappear before I can buy them. Worried about this simply because I know certain quests become unavailable after an amount of time and I want to make sure shop items aren't like that too.

How often do unique monsters respawn? I took out Verdant Bluchal sometime back, then later picked up the quest for taking it out, where I was able to kill it again. However, I haven't seen Evil Rhangot again and need to rekill it for a quest. Still can't get Lure to work. It just has an X over it. Finally got the Party Gague. Does it reset after each battle? Any tips for finding missing quests? I need Challenge 3 and Search 2. I know that people hang out in different places at different times of day or sometimes aren't there at all at certain times of day. Is it just a day/night thing, or are the hours more specific?

Unique Monsters will eventually respawn if you keep fast traveling near them. It'll take around 5 attempts to get it to work. You need to be within a certain range of an enemy to lure them. The party gauge slowly depletes after each battle, but it doesn't reset. Most people will be out at either 10:00 (day) and 22:00 (night). When searching for specific people, set the clock to either of these times, and they're almost certain to be up at one or both of these times. Challenge 3 is given by a defence soldier near the entrance of the Military District at night. Search 2 is given by a nopon southeast of the Residential District during the day.
